How to sell your stuff on WhatsApp (without being annoying)

WhatsApp is where deals happen. Not on marketplaces where your listing competes with thousands of others. Not on social media where algorithms decide who sees your post. On WhatsApp, you're talking directly to people who already know and trust you.

Why WhatsApp works

In most of Europe, WhatsApp is the default messaging app. Your friends, family, colleagues, neighbours — they're all on it. When you share a link in a group or a story, it lands directly in front of people who are already inclined to buy from someone they know.

The problem with marketplace listings

Marktplaats, Vinted, Facebook Marketplace — they all work, but they come with friction:

  • You're competing with dozens of identical listings
  • Strangers lowball you because there's no social accountability
  • The platform takes a cut or buries your listing
  • You have to write detailed descriptions for every item

A better approach: the shelf link

Instead of listing items one by one on a marketplace, create a themed collection — a "shelf" — and share one link. A shelf could be:

  • Spring cleaning: everything you're getting rid of this season
  • Baby outgrown: clothes and toys your kid has moved past
  • Moving sale: furniture and household items

One link. Drop it in your building's WhatsApp group, your friends group, your Instagram story. Anyone who taps it sees a clean page with your items, prices, and a button to message you directly.

Tips for not being annoying

  • Don't spam: Share your shelf link once per group, max. If people are interested, they'll click.
  • Use Stories: WhatsApp and Instagram Stories disappear in 24 hours. Perfect for "clearing out this weekend" posts.
  • Price fairly: Overpricing makes people ignore you. Check what similar items go for and price at or slightly below.
  • Respond quickly: When someone messages "I'm interested," reply within an hour. Speed wins sales.
  • Be honest: If something has a scratch, say so in the description. Trust is everything when selling to people you know.

The pre-written message trick

The best part of sharing a storay link is that buyers don't have to compose a message. They tap "I'm interested," and WhatsApp opens with a pre-written message listing exactly what they want and the total price. All they do is hit send. Zero friction.

Start small

You don't need to photograph your entire house. Start with 5 items. Create a shelf. Share the link. See what happens. Most people are surprised how quickly things sell when you make it easy for buyers.
